About This Site

Muscle Building List is written for people over 50 who lift, walk and want to keep their strength for the long haul. We cover the handful of supplements that come up most at the gym and the doctor's office: creatine, whey protein, collagen peptides, omega-3 fish oil and vitamin D3 + K2. Each one was taken on its own for at least eight weeks, logged in a notebook, and written up plainly, including what did nothing.

Supplement Safety

Supplements are not medicine and nothing on this site is medical advice. Talk with your own doctor before you start any supplement, and bring the bottle to your next appointment so they can see exactly what is in it.

Some combinations need extra care. Fish oil and vitamin K2 can interact with blood thinners such as warfarin, and vitamin K2 in particular can change how those drugs work. Creatine and high protein intake are generally studied as safe in healthy adults, but anyone with kidney disease or reduced kidney function should only use them with their doctor's approval. Vitamin D is fat soluble and builds up in the body, so more is not better; ask for a blood test rather than guessing at a dose.

Read the label for allergens: whey protein contains milk, fish oil comes from fish, and collagen is usually made from cattle or fish. Stop taking any product and call your doctor if you notice swelling, a rash, stomach trouble that does not settle, or anything that worries you. Keep all supplements out of reach of children.
